Kraft foods is trying to buy the English candy company Cadbury for $18.9 billion. Cadbury has always stood out as a unique, high quality product. If the shareholders end up going for the Kraft bid, they will be just another brand added to the mega company Kraft. Below is a list of all the Kraft brands listed on their website.

.

A major part of the food market is controlled by such a small group of companies — Kraft, Tyson, Cargill, ConAgra, Smithfield Foods, General Mills, Kellogg’s, . Cadbury has been one of few the small companies that has been able to prosper in a global market. I think it will be a major loss to consumers and the Cadbury name to see Cadbury fall under the wing of a mega corporation.

.

Another interesting fact about Kraft, they aren’t the top of the food chain. Kraft is owned by Phillip Morris Companies Inc.

.

.

This list may have changed recently since Kraft sold off some of it’s brands to offer Cadbury more money. Please leave comments with any additions or corrections.

My father fought in World War II, volunteered for the Army and volunteered to be a forward artillery observer. He lasted about 50 days in combat, twice as long as most FOAs. One side of his face was blown off and he lost an eye. I didn’t know he won a bronze star for bravery until after he died and I obtained his military records. He didn’t brag about the war and had no use for those who did. He was proud of the fact that he never fired his pistol at anyone. He knew what the impact was on people of the shelling he called in because he called down the artillery strike on himself. The artillery strike destroyed a German machine gun position, according to the field reports.

.

The purpose of this is more than just telling my father’s brief part in the war. It is to say that heroes are average people who do extraordinary things. And, then they live with the consequences for the rest of their lives. Based on the three other combat veterans from World War II I have known, even those who do not earn a purple heart come home having to come to terms with things that humans should not have to do. People cannot be trained to kill others and to watch others be killed, they cannot fight in combat in general without being affected.

.

Before we ask any person to fight for country and flag, we should make sure that we are asking them to fight in a just cause that requires their sacrifice. My father never questioned his sacrifice because he knew he did the awful things for the right reasons.

.

Having lived with a hero for 13 years and knowing three others well, I think we should be reluctant to throw the term “hero” around. I respect people for going into the military. Most make big personal sacrifices. But not everyone who serves is a hero. We should save that word. Superlatives carry little meaning.

.

Vietnam was a wasted war. Something like 56,000 Americans died. Many “heroes” served their country by protesting the war and forcing Americans to face the moral issues. We fought the war to stop communism and to protect America. Tonight, if you cannot sleep at night because you fear the spread of Vietnam’s influence in the world, then you are having a bad reaction from the Mekong River catfish you ate for supper. They are for sale in most grocery stores in the U.S.

.

Most of the time when we talk about wars we talk about battles, generals, and victories. There is general agreement that we did not lose a battle in Vietnam, but lost the war. Of course, victories did not mean much in Vietnam, except in body count.

.

The real impact of war should be: Who Won the Peace? The U.S. won the peace in Vietnam. Most people in Vietnam live lives of self determination, if only because the government is weak and cannot reach most people. The economy is essentially capitalistic. Vietnam is a single nation, which has had positive effects on U.S. foreign policy. We won the peace.

.

The U.S. definitely won the peace in World War II. We remain the dominant power in the world because of the outcomes resulting from the war. China is becoming a winner since the war led to the communism revolution, which led to the development of a centralized, planned capitalistic economy.

.

France, England, and much of Europe lost world prestige after the war. However, under the protection of the U.S. military, they have been successful at building a 21st Century economy.

.

Interestingly, Japan, Germany, and Italy won the peace. Each rebuilt new economies after the war, thanks to U.S. aid, and live in peace today after giving up hegemonic political processes—i.e., dreams of world domination.

.

The big losers of WW II have probably been the poor countries of the world. Most gained freedom from European colonizers after the war, which was a good thing. But the European colonizers pulled out and left a political and economy mess behind after destroying the traditional social and political integrity of their colonies.

.

All this brings us to Afghanistan and Iraq. The question is not: How do we win these wars? The question is: What should the peace be? I do not mean what serves the interests of the United States best. As the aftermath of World War II proved, the U.S. has little control over events once the fighting stops. We need to plan for a sustainable peace. We need a war strategy that creates a sustainable peace. Sustainable peace is going to require the agreement of the people who live there.

.

Afghanistan is a “country” only in geographical terms—it is a location on a map. The Pashtuns, the largest group in Afghanistan, have been in armed conflict with other ethnic groups for generations. They are a majority that has traditionally controlled the government in Kabul. Adding to the complexity, the Pashtun ignore borders and also live in Pakistan. Any peace in Afghanistan has to account for Pakistan, a country that cannot achieve peace within its borders when there are destabilizing Pashtun elements in Afghanistan. Do not forget the conflicting views of Islam within Afghanistan and Pakistan. Plus, Afghanistan has little wealth and little way of generating wealth without the heroin trade. It is a 18th Century country in a 21st Century world. Do we create peace by leaving them in the 1700s or by bringing the Afghans into the 21st Century?

.

Peace in Iraq looks easier in comparison to Afghanistan. If the Sunnis, the Shias, and the Kurks can just get along, they will bring the rest of Iraq along. Saddam created “peace” with poison gas and military force. Before Saddam, the British lacked the poison gas, but used the military to enforce the creation of an Iraq. The British gave up the oil and went back to London.

.

The Shias are the majority in Iraq, which is the same dominant group in Iran. Iran seeks Shia hegemony by supporting Syria and funding militias in Lebanon and Palestine. If Iran created Shia unity from Afghanistan, to Iran, to Iraq, to Lebanon, to Syria, and to Palestine, I doubt the Christian world would find much peace in the world. Of course, if the U.S. achieved some kind of peace with Iran after 30 years of conflict, then maybe peace would be easier to achieve in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then in Pakistan. And, Palestine.

.

Americans like to think of themselves as peaceful people. In my lifetime, American troops have been sent into conflict in Korea, Vietnam, Haiti, Panama, Lebanon, Somali, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, El Salvador, Laos, Cambodia, Grenada, Libya, Kuwait, and Pakistan. I am ignoring naval actions, generally the Air Force, and special forces operations. The Cold War and the threat of nuclear annihilation dominated my first 20 years. Things were peaceful in 1976, if I remember right.

.

So, we keep asking Americans to fight and die in wars that do not bring peace.
